The Herajärven Kierros Trail, located in the spectacular surroundings of Koli Hill, has been extended into a 60-km-long hiking trail. The extension gives the hikers new trail alternatives and offers a large variety of nature experiences. The trail is enlivened by rocky hilltops, old-growth forests and cultural landscapes.

“The trail consists of two circular routes, offering you the choice of a 60-km, 40-km or 30-km trail. It is even suitable for beginners as long as they remember to adjust their daily journey to their level of fitness. The guides at Ukko Visitor Centre are happy to help you in finding a suitable trail alternative," says
Heikki Hamunen, project manager in the project concerning the extension of the Herajärven Kierros Trail.
The Herajärven Kierros Trail is demanding because of the differences in altitude. There are laborious climbs and steep downhill sections along the trail. At one point, the River Herajoki is crossed with the help of a wading cable and at another point with the help of a rope-pulley ferry. The wading cable is the first in southern Finland. You have to be bold enough to get your toes wet when using it. The trail is demanding due to the differences in altitude, but if you are up for more challenging exercise, you can always increase your speed. Every autumn, the Marathon of Dangers is organised on the Herajärven Kierros Trail.
“It is advisable to allow 3-4 days for completing the entire Herajärven Kierros Trail. You may stay overnight at the lean-to shelters, in a tent or at Metsähallitus’ rental huts along the trail. The renovation of the Jero and Pärnälahti rental huts has just been completed, and it is now comfortable to stay there overnight in early spring and late autumn as well,” says
Kyösti Tuhkalainen, Park Superintendent, Metsähallitus.
The Herajärven Kierros Trail, awarded Trekking Destination of 2007, was extended through project funding. Thanks to the project, there are new service structures along the trail, such as lean-to shelters, rest spots, information boards and parking areas in addition to the increased length of the trail. Information on the trail is available to hikers via new web pages, brochures and a presentation video. The English-language material facilitates the international marketing of the trail.
