Services in Kvarken Archipelago Nature Reserve

Customer Service and Guidance

Nature Stations

The nature stations are former pilot stations or coastguard stations, which have been renovated for visitors to use. All the nature stations offer accommodation for groups. A fee is charged. Other services of the nature stations vary. For example, there is a guide at Mickelsörarna Nature Station during the summer. There is a summer café at Mässkär Nature Station and a photo exhibition at Rönnskär Nature Station. At Molpe Nature Station, you can walk on a nature trail and see the great scenery from the tower of the station.

Shops and Restaurants

  • There are shops and restaurants in the centres of the municipalities in Kvarken Archipelago.
  • There are shops, summer shops and restaurants also on Replot Island, in the village of Björköby, in the municipality of Maxmo and on Bergö Island.

Campfire Sites, Metsähallitus

There are dry toilets on the campfire sites on islands managed by Metsähallitus. The campfire sites are located on the following islands:

  • Gåshällan, Närpes (62˚34,5` 21˚02,9`)
  • Kummelskär, Maxmo (lean-to shelter) (63˚27,6` 21˚46,6`)
  • Kvicksund, Korsholm (63˚19,15` 21˚10,7`)
  • Moikipää, Korsnäs (62˚53,5` 21˚05,7`)
  • Mässkär, Jakobstad (63˚43,6` 22˚36,1`)
  • Rönnskär, Malax (63˚03,7` 20˚48,5`)
  • Sommarö lean-to shelter, Korsholm (63˚9,7` 21˚18,9`)

Lighting campfires is forbidden also at the constructed campfire sites if the forest fire warning is in effect. More information about lighting campfires can be found at Hiking in Finland.

Drinking Water

  • There is drinking water available in the guest harbours.
  • At other destinations, you need to bring your own drinking water.

Waste Management

Keep the Archipelago Tidy Association (www.pidasaaristosiistina.fi) is responsible for the waste management in the archipelago. They have recycling points called Roska-Roope on several islands in Kvarken.

Toilets

  • There are dry toilets on all the nature stations.
  • There are also dry toilets at the huts of
  • Björkören (in Finnish), Vargis (in Finnish) and Sommarö (in Finnish) fort.
  • Along Björköby - Panike
  • Trail, there are two dry toilets.
  • By Roska-Roope recycling points, there are also dry toilets, the locations of which can be found on the webpage of Keep the Archipelago Tidy Association (www.pidasaaristosiistina.fi).

Camping and Huts

Nature Stations

All the nature stations offer accommodation, in the first place for guided groups. A fee is charged. The nature stations are former pilot stations or coastguard stations, which have been renovated for visitors to use.

Rental Huts

  • Björkören (in Finnish) Hut in the village of Panike in Korsholm. Room for 8 people, electricity, sauna.
  • Vargis (in Finnish) Hut in a boathouse, in the village of Panike in Korsholm. Room for 10 people on bunks, iron stove heating.
  • Sommarö (in Finnish) Hut in the former guardroom, in the village of Södra Vallgrund in Korsholm. Room for 10 people, electricity, shower, sauna.

Lodging in the Surrounding Area

  • There area several guest harbours in the archipelago. Information about locations and services of the harbours you can find in the book
  • "Käyntisatamat - Besökshamnar" (www.finnlake.com) which is published every year. The book is available from well-stocked bookshops, boat fuel stations and beach kiosks.
  • More information on hotels etc. can be found on the website of the town of Vaasa (www.vaasa.fi).

Services for the Disabled

At the moment, there are no special services for the disabled on the nature stations and huts. You can ask about services for the disabled from Keep the Archipelago Tidy Association (www.pidasaaristosiistina.fi).

  • There are several service harbours, excursion harbours, and other landing and camping places. More information you can find in the book "Käyntisatamat - Besökshamnar" (www.finnlake.com), which is published every year, and on nautical charts.
