Photo: Matti Mela.Tsarmitunturi Wilderness Area is relatively small but has exceptional landscape. It is a fell area near the Russian border, in the municiplaity of Inari. It is located between the roads from Ivalo to Nellim and Raja-Jooseppi, and the Russian border. The highland of Tsarmitunturi Fell and Akalauttapää Fell form the heart of the area. These two are divided by the deep Pahakuru Ravine.

The fell area is surrounded by spruce forests growing Horsetail lichen and, on the northern side, there are very old pine forests. On the cool and damp slopes, small brooks join each other and eventually flow into the Rivers Luttojoki and Paatsjoki.

There are no constructed facilities for hikers, but an experienced hiker may stay in the area for days to enjoy the great scenery. In this beautiful wilderness area, you find the natural features of Lapland admired by hikers. It is also possible to make day trips, because the forest roads of Kontosjärvi and Nangujärvi reach the edge of the area.

The remote Tsarmitunturi area is also favoured by hunters. The average population of land birds, and the possibity to see a bear are the main reasons for many hunters to arrive year after year.
