Province of
Western Finland, Southwest Finland Region
Kimitoön (www.kimitoon.fi, in
Swedish and Finnish) and Väståboland
(www.vastaboland.fi)
Area 500 sq.km. Established in 1983.
The area is
managed by Metsähallitus.
The Archipelago in the Baltic Sea was created by the
Ice Age. Rugged rocky islets and forested islands, separated by open sea, are
characteristic to the area. The nature trails guide you to the diversity of the
natural features and the life of the archipelago. In the National Park visitors
can use their own boat, the ferry services, or take part in guided boat trips
arranged by local enterprises.
A large co-operation area surrouds the national park. In the area, the
state-owned waters and lands, (excluding areas of defence forces) form the
national park. The park includes state-owned lands and waters, inside a larger
co-operation area surrounding it. The park also forms the core area of the large
Archipelago Sea Biosphere
Reserve, which was established by UNESCO in 1994 to promote sustainable
development, and research on interdependency between man and the nature.
