What can one do in Teerisuo - Lososuo Mire Reserve?

Walk on Marked Trails

The area has 11.5 km of trail, which leads across level easy to travel terrain. The trail leads alternately across mires and through small forest islets. In addition to a marked trail visitors may wander off trails in the area, but we recommend you not do so in spring and early summer so as not to disturb birds when they are nesting.

Go Wilderness Trekking

The UKK Hiking Trail leads through the area. Along it hikers can make their way southwest to Hiidenportti National Park or northeast to the town of Kuhmo and on from there to Suomussalmi.

Go Bird Watching

The Teerisuo - Lososuo area is a wonderful place to observe birds typical of the mires and old-growth forests. There is however no bird watching tower or other structures for bird watching in the area.

Petola Visitor Centre near the urban area of Kuhmo is the visitor centre which serves all of the nature reserves and hiking areas in the South Kainuu region.

Ski Cross-country off Trails

The area offers the opportunity for skiing in winter, but there are no maintained ski trails there. Skiers can ski along the maintenance snow mobile track.

Go Fishing

There are only small water systems within Teerisuo - Lososuo, and so the area does not hold great significance fishing wise. Fishing is however permitted in the area according to fishing regulations which are presently in force.

Go on Guided Group Tour in the Mire Reserve

Different types of guided group tours are arranged in the Teerisuo - Lososuo area if ordered in advance, which feature the Kainuu area mires and old-growth forests. For more information on different excursions and tours in the terrain contact Petola Visitor Centre. There is no set timetable for tours and they are only arranged if reserved in advance.

Go Hunting

Hunting is permitted in the Teerisuo - Lososuo area according to those hunting regulations which are presently in force. The area is part of the Etelä-Kuhmo 5619 small game hunting area. Permits can be bought from Metsähallitus netstore (www.eräluvat.fi, in Finnish).

Go Berry and Mushroom Picking

Picking berries and mushrooms is permitted in the area. A variety of berries grow in the area: lingonberry, blueberry, bog bilberries and crowberries. In the mire cloudberries and cranberries are the dominant berries.

Go Snowshoe Walking

The area is ideal for snowshoe walking.
