Starting Points for Trails

Nature Trails

  • There are 14 nature trails in the National Park, of which 8 are in the Ylläs area, 4 in the Pallas area, and 2 are in the Ounastunturi Fells area. Further information on nature trails is given in the end of this page.

Circle Trails

Other Trails

  • There are 4 long trekking trails: Hetta - Pallas Trail (55 km), Ylläs - Olos Trail (54 km), Ylläs - Pallas Trail (72 km) and Ylläs - Levi Trail (50 km).

Skiing Trails

  • Photo: Sauli KoskiThere are over 500 km of cross-country skiing trails in the area. The majority of these are maintained with machines. Skiing trails are marked with crosses on fells and mires and with blue ribbons or blue paint triangles on trees in forests. Skiing trails close to the villages of Äkäslompolo, Ylläsjärvi and Jerisjärvi, Pallastunturi Fell, Vuontispirtti and Hetta village are suitable for both classical cross-country skiing and free style skiing. Some of the most remote trails which are so-called wilderness skiing trails are maintained only by snowmobiles. Local enterprises maintain the trails and have published maps of skiing trails in Aakenus, Muonio and Hetta. These maps are sold by local tourist services, visitor centres and nature centres.

The trail leads through rugged fell terrain around Keskisenlaki in Ylläs. The trail has duckboards when passing through the beautiful, but rocky Kellostapuli Ravine.

The starting point for this trail is on the Äkäslompolo - Kittilä road. It is marked with paint markings.

The Linkupalo bedrock bears evidence of volcanic eruptions (tulivuori = volcano), which occurred 2 milliard years ago. Geologists explain that the eruptions happened under water in the sea and that ash and gravel gathered in shallow waters to form this area. The precise spots where eruptions took place can be pointed out from the terrain. Tales told about Laplands ancient volcanoes and mountains as high as the Alps were therefore true.
    • Services: A Lapp pole tent at the trail starting point.
