Lake Pihlajavesi, a part of greater Saimaa lake complex, represents Finnish lakeland at its best. With its labyrinth of islands and broad open waters it is a fascinating destination for boat trips lasting for several days. Lake Pihlajavesi, with the medieval Olavinlinna Castle surrounded by the lake, is listed as one of the Finland's national landscapes. There are over ten excursion harbours for visitors. The Saimaa ringed seal (Phoca hispida saimensis) also enjoys the clear waters and peaceful atmosphere of the area.
To protect the valuable natural features and the unbuilt landscape on the shores, Lake Pihlajavesi has been included in the Shore Conservation Programme. The state has aquired areas for establishing a statutory nature reserve. Protection does not rule out visiting the area - as long as visitors do not damage the natural features. You are also welcome to experience the peace of the archipelago!
